Artistic and historical documentation

In order to establish the author of an artwork at least three different and professional points of view should converge:

• First, to accept that an artwork is a "physicochemical reality" and, therefore, that scientific methodologies are helpful for dating, cataloging and conservation.
• Second, a stylistic and iconographic analysis of the artwork is necessary by an art historian specialist.
• Third, it is very helpful if a reliable documental history of the artwork exists (ancient files, Royal collections, inventories...)

 

The first point is carried out in our laboratory. The other two points are treated by different professionals who study the artwork (an specific period, school or artist...).

All this information is collected in order to develop a complete documentation (scientific, artistic and historical) of an artwork.
